In the summer of 2006, Hampton Redevelopment and Housing Authority will complete the Celey Homes development which includes seven single family homes on the corner of Celey Street and Shell Road.  Each home has either 3 or 4 bedrooms and ranges in size from 1,500 to over 1,700 square feet.  Once complete, the homes will be sold through a partnership with Long and Foster Realty as part of the Authority’s long standing goal of opening doors to new opportunities in the area of homeownership. 

Before determining which homes to build, the Authority partnered with several City departments and neighborhood leaders.  In accordance with the Olde Wythe Neighborhood Plan, we took great care to incorporate “design changes that respect the traditional character and diversity of the Olde Wythe neighborhood”.  These designs were presented to the Planning Commission and City Council and were unanimously approved.  Members of the Planning Commission commended the Authority for both the design and the quality of materials used. 

After a competitive bidding process, the Authority went into contract with D.K. Nunnally to construct the homes.  The interiors feature crown molding and an appliance package that includes a dishwasher, stove and built-in microwave.  Exterior features include brick foundations, deep front porches and a diversity of materials.  In further support of the neighborhood plan, we included sidewalks to link the new construction with the existing homes in the area. 

To paraphrase comments made to Authority staff, the homes are “simply beautiful” and “a great asset to the community”. 

To promote homeownership in Hampton, and to assist low income homebuyers, the Authority offers down payment and closing cost assistance on an as-needed basis, to the purchasers of these homes.  Specific guidelines apply, so interested low income homebuyers must contact Sandra Pugh (757-879-2241) of Long and Foster Realtors for details.
